Darren Gergle is an Assistant Professor in the departments of Communication Studies and Electrical Engineering & Computer Science at Northwestern University. He is also a member of the Center for Technology and Social Behavior. He advises students in Communication Studies, EECS and the Technology and Social Behavior joint PhD in Computer Science and Communication Studies. His research laboratory is the CollaboLab - the laboratory for understanding collaborative technology.

His research is in the fields of Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), Computer-Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW) and Computer-Mediated Communication (CMC) with an interest in developing a theoretical understanding of the role that visual information plays in supporting communication and small group interactions. He is also interested in applying social and cognitive psychology theory to the design, deployment and evaluation of computing technologies.


Recent News

Our lab will be presenting two papers at the upcoming CSCW 2008 conference:

  • Scissors, Gill and Gergle will be presenting, "Linguistic Mimicry and Trust in Text-Based CMC". Also nominated as "Best of CSCW2008".
  • Gill, French, Gergle and Oberlander will be presenting, "The Language of Emotion in Short Blog Texts".

Pardo, Gergle and Leider (Univ. of Miami) recently received an NSF Creative IT grant to study personalized tools that support musical creativity.

Cassell, Gergle and Horton have received an IIS-HCC grant from the NSF to study the biological, contextual and social factors that influence conversational grounding behavior in people and machines.
